Second rate

She felt it was time

To chain together,

In evil heather;

To admit to that whether

She just knew to be true.

“You sure you’re as straight

As you always did claim?”

“Straight as a die,” she replies:

“Straighter than you.

“Straighter and gagging for it.

Didn’t you know?”

“Then why all the problems?

Why the long faces?”

“Because, whilst straight I might be,

The truth of the matter

Is that abuse for a time

Produces no healthy rhyme:

And when I see beautiful man,

All I feel is the refusal

And rejection I’ve suffered

Over thirty long years:

Over thirty long years

And the tears wept, in silence.”

And that’s how a beloved one

Makes a life

Second rate.
